Distance: a reality at the core of all aspects of rural life. All supplies, both personal and property, medical care, social contacts, communication, business, including financial services, education, recreation and leisure are limited or permitted by the distance to facilities or personnel. Opportunities can be lost, relationships can stagnate or dissolve in the kilometres and the time taken to bridge them. No matter the skill of time management, sometimes there is just not enough time.
Curator’s Comment
Through this work you have demonstrated the effective use of mixed media components to imbue the surface with a textural quality. This is supported by a strong visual composition, achieved particularly through the depiction of natural and built environments juxtaposed against each other. The artwork statement provides a strong, authentic narrative. It would be good to draw connection between this thematic framework and the techniques and materials employed to deploy it.
Mastering traditional techniques and experimenting with their application in new situations provides a creative challenge, intrigue and fulfilment to Kay Joyce. Kay enjoys the freedom provided by the intrinsic visual and tactile qualities of fibres, yarns and fabrics in combination with hand and machine techniques to tell a story as it relates to a theme.
