Disruption can be seen in many forms, a break, an interruption, or even a disturbance. In the case of Cascading tether, it presents a physical disruption as well as symbolises the disconnect that arises when a natural form is manipulated by human intervention. The intricately carved bonsai pot design appears to defy gravity, hovering above its sturdy, unadorned timber base. Both are cut from the same lumber and connected only by a delicate, cascading tree of twisting silver wire; a representation of how, despite the carved refinements, they remain ultimately connected.
Skilful and clever piece. Shows strong understanding to materials and ideas of volume. Captivating balance and tension with binaries of stability and instability, connection and disconnection. Links to further themes of liminality, precariousness and the void are also evident. Great demonstration of the theme.
Steve Cant enjoys working with recycled and reclaimed wood due to its unique features, colours and patterns in the timber. The part Cant appreciates the most is the process of using hand tools to uncover the complexity within each piece, letting the grain guide the art direction as much as possible.
