Artwork Statement

Remains of an ancient Tasmanian Huon Pine tree stump was a challenge to design and carve. The shape of the wood, and many challenges influenced the design and form of this sculpture. Defects and decay constantly disrupted the carving process. Constant lateral thinking and improvisation was required to discover and define the elusive abstract sculpture within. Structural integrity has been maintained with diagonal and flowing lines through negative spaces resulting in movement and expression. The retained band of sapwood depicts ancient aspects and provides contrasting texture and colour.

About the artist

Guy Breay obtains most of his salvaged timber and colourful stone from local sources. He is attracted to the texture of old gnarled and twisted wood, especially tree stumps and dead branches that already have interesting shapes and movement. Breay’s carving styles and media constantly evolve.
