Artwork Statement

This piece explores disrupt as a force that both breaks and reveals but is not to be feared. The fragile clay surface is carved open leaving the form exposed and structurally vulnerable, an act that disrupts its stability. The piece is then pushed to its limits with the volatility of the raku firing process. The high temperature, flames, smoke and the rapid cooling that marks the clay with cracks and scars, yet the piece endures. Riven resilience reflects the idea that to be disrupted is not to be broken, but to be reshaped, altered by fire and risk transforming into something beautiful and stronger.

About the artist

Life has disrupted Kay Vidler’s pottery journey more than once. After a long break from the wheel, Vidler returned to her tools and equipment. Events in life brought clarity to Vidler and her practice. From this she has decided on what truly matters to her and she has chosen clay. Vidler works in the medium of raku firing where fire and resilience echo her own lifepath.
