Familiar patterns fracture. Some disruptions never resolve; they undulate endlessly, colliding into rocky shores. Monochrome tones reflect loss’s disorientation: the violent quietness of grief. At its core lies a seismic, invisible rupture; a cavity once filled with life, surrounded by storms. Absence ripples outward, unravelling identity, safety, and hope like satin torn across splintered glass. The canvas cracks like timelines interrupted. The imperfect mending, the delicate, non-linear stitching of oneself continues.
Thoughtful and measured response to the theme that asks what a rupture looks like and how this might feel. The painting is reminicent of a volcanic eruption to serve as this symbol. Consideration is given to the textures, volume and colour to evoke the convulsing or rippling of the forms. The careful choice of the shape of the canvas enhances the rupturing effect. Moreover, the title ‘after the fold’ draws out the sensory induced reading of the work; a folding in and rupturing out. The title also opens to conversation or ideas of the ‘aftermath’ of destruction.
Lauren Bensan’s artworks emerge intuitively through painting and mixed media, exploring illness, grief, and pain. Hands and brushes speak when words fail, making visible the residues of survival. Her work transforms personal suffering into a universal language.
