This piece disrupts the idea of nature being calm and peaceful. Scars found on old trees – the cracks, the chaos, the beauty, all tell a story. A story of strength and resilience in our Australian landscape. In making this piece I disrupted each layer of paint while still wet with a different medium, in order to create these rough textures. Starting with inks I worked into it while wet with acrylics and oil pastels. When it was dry I then started the process again building up the layers until I got the desired effect.
Patricia Hinz is a mixed media artist based in Drillham on the Western Downs. Her artistic practice is deeply entwined with the natural environment surrounding her. Working predominately with water-based mediums she often incorporates natural pigments sourced from her environment. The abstract textures and colours in Hinz’s work challenges the viewer to look deeper and question what is beneath the surface – what has done before and lies ahead.
