What is living? Akin to trees communicating through underground mycorrhizal networks, the human neurological system works in much the same way with synapses and neurons facilitating the flow of information throughout the body. For individuals living with dementia these networks are disrupted, progressively impairing communication crucial for cognition, sensory perception, emotional regulation, and motor control until the body ceases to function. Dementia diminishes a person’s autonomy and dignity, and its diagnosis negates that person’s right to choose an alternative to ‘living’.
Robertson is an occasional artist striving to find time to create whilst caring for her parents who both have dementia. Through the medium of watercolour, she endeavours to stimulate conversations about dementia and its impact, not only on those living with dementia but also those who love and care for them; advocating for change to the status quo.
