Nail pierces wood; an interruption of life. Splintering the years and the rings of her growth. An inexcusable breach of the sacred. A violence; a rupture; a rift. Like nails through a saviour’s hand.
Successful approach to the theme by asking what disruption might look and feel like, and what effect that might have. Here, the drawing is both a literal and metaphorical emblem. A pierced skin, an interrupted pattern. The open wood block exposes the growth across long spans of time, and how one action might splinter its shape and integrity. The work cleverly considers tension with internal/external dynamics, and undertones of labour and time. A simple thoughtful image, effectively rendered, and enhanced by its floating, translucent frame.
Lucy Herd has always been moved by the often overlooked beauty of the everyday. Making images that draw on the simplest subject matter, she elevates the ordinary to the place of the exquisite, imploring the viewer to see the glimpses of glory lurking around us in plain sight.
