Artwork Statement

During COVID-19 lockdowns, daily life shifted online. Many turned to creativity for comfort amid isolation and uncertainty. In 2021, I participated in GOMA’s online life drawing sessions, where masked models appeared eerily surreal. These sketches became the foundation for Bound 2019 and later evolved into Suspended 2019. The digitally reworked figure, bound and masked, represents the restrictions endured during the pandemic. Repeated in a grid and suspended from the surface, one figure is missing, evoking a sense of loss. The arrangement echoes cemetery rows, a quiet tribute to the lives lost.

Curator's Comment

Visually striking and highly measured work. The death and loss undertones are prominent and successfully achieved through the composition and perspective of the body, the shadows created by floating the figures, reddish taping to hold the body down, and the tally-like configuration as an effect of repetition and line. Repetition as a strategy also tends to connection/disconnection and loss/absence, which sees this as a strong choice. The connection between life drawing and death is interesting. A strength of the work is that there is enough for the viewer to grasp on to without reading the artist statement. Commend the artist for the bold, courageous piece that looks to depart from her typical practice, and I encourage her to continue these lines of thinking and making.
