Artwork Statement
Pleasing Pastimes features a carefully twisted wire tree atop a carved bonsai pot made from camphor laurel timber. Inspired by my own afternoon ritual, this piece combines my two passions of woodworking and tending to my bonsai. After work I enjoy the calming nature of pruning, fertilising and repotting in the art of bonsai or the repetitive slow chiselling, sanding and staining of woodworking. Both practices share a quiet rhythm of patience and repetition, culminating in the satisfaction of creating something by hand.
About the artist
Steve Cant enjoys working with recycled and reclaimed wood due to its unique features, colours and patterns in the timber. The part Cant appreciates the most is the process of using hand tools to uncover the complexity within each piece, letting the grain guide the art direction as much as possible.
