Have you ever wondered at what point we lose ourselves? When does the human body and mind become corrupted and altered to the point of being unrecognisable? I chose to use the idea of disruption of the human body by fungi to ask this question. Losing ourselves through the hands of something we can’t control is a terrifying thought. When something we’ve become comfortable with in our lives adapts and turns on us, and we become the living organism from which they feed, when do we lose ourselves?
A powerful image that is shocking and disturbs. The frustration of a hidden monster lurking, and as something unrecognisable and uncomfortable – but that grows and transforms – pulls into my psyche. A fear of what might be inside you. The work incites me to scream back and in this way becomes a form of resistance to activate the nervous system, to feel and react, instead of being numb. The overlay of naive, fun and light hearted pictures constrasts emotions. The piece leans into concepts of conceal/reveal.
