Artwork Statement
When I was a small child, we celebrated the annual ritual of Guy Fawkes Night on the 5th of November with a bonfire and a small assortment of fireworks. Mostly I remember waving my sparkler around and being chased by my big brother with Tom Thumbs. After moving from the farm, I missed the revelry we all enjoyed as a family in those early years.
About the artist
As an artist in the Western Downs, Shirley Makin draws inspiration from social dynamics, nature, her environment and relationships. Makin’s conceptual approach spans painting and installation, marked by experimentation and the use of found materials to narrate stories reflecting rural life. Most recently she has been exploring needlework and photography as well as other forms of artistic expression.
