A retreat from the reality of everyday life for rural communities has for generations pivoted around the ritual of holidays at the beach. As holiday times approach, holiday houses are booked, caravans are readied, tents are aired and checklists are made. What will we be doing? Where will we go? Will our friends from last year be there? The euphoria of preparation culminates in the last-minute pack-up of suncream, hats and boogie boards, and getting into the car for the long drive to the eastern coastline. “Are we there yet? Are we there yet?” becomes the mantra of the backseat drivers, until the first glimpse of the promised golden paradise.
