My video work is an artistic rendition of putting on and taking off make-up. I wanted to depict the layered hours and ritualistic nature of staring at myself in the mirror and applying a cosmetic mask. I feel make-up is a conundrum – on one hand it can harbor self-expression, transformation, and be used in times of celebration, and on the other, it can feed unrealistic western beauty standards. In this work I wanted to blur the lines between skin and paint, beauty and abject, and artwork and artist. I created this work using my iPhone and video manipulation software.
