In many ways, Ritual and Revelry captures something quintessentially Western Downs. Ours is a region shaped by history, tradition and a strong connection to place. From the rhythms of the agricultural seasons to weekend sports and lazy evenings spent with friends and family, our rituals have helped shape our identity.

The enduring rhythms of rural life are more than just a link to our past; they are something we celebrate. Across the Western Downs, the stories that built our region continue to bring people together, turning shared heritage into shared celebration. In that sense, the relationship between ritual and revelry is not simply this year’s exhibition theme, but something woven into the character of the Western Downs itself.

The artworks featured in this exhibition explore these ideas through a diverse range of personal stories and lived experiences. Together, they remind us that the seemingly ordinary moments of everyday life often become the things that matter most.
